Kittiwake

The Hut

A labour of love, hand-built with local wood and a boat worked into the roof.

Built by hand, from the land

Kittiwake was sustainably built using locally sourced wood, with a boat repurposed as part of the roof — a distinctive architectural touch that connects the hut to the maritime heritage of the Hebrides.

Set in mature woodland within the Calgary Art in Nature sculpture walk, the hut sits on a small hill among art installations, with outstanding views over Calgary Bay. It's a place to disconnect, slow down, and wake to birdsong instead of alarms.

This is genuinely off-grid living: solar lights and candles for the evening, a wood-burning stove for warmth, and a camping stove for cooking. No mains electricity, no running water in the hut, no mobile signal, no distractions.

Common questions

Can I bring pets?
We'd love to welcome dogs, but the local wildlife — otters on the shore, sea eagles overhead, red deer in the glen — means we keep Kittiwake pet-free to protect them. It's one of the things that makes the spot so special.
Is there phone signal?
There is no mobile signal at the hut. Wi-Fi is available at the Calgary Bay Co Cafe by the car park, about a 5-minute walk away. Part of the charm is disconnecting — bring a book, not a screen.
Is there a shower?
Yes. There is a dedicated shower room with flushing toilet and basin by the car park, about a 5-minute walk from the hut, available 24/7. Staff may occasionally use it too. There is also an outside basin for washing dishes and refilling your water container. For nighttime convenience, the eco-toilet is in its own outhouse below the hut, with a separate entrance.
Where do I park?
Free parking is available at the Calgary Art in Nature car park, a 5-minute walk from the hut. From there it is a 200m woodland path — a wheelbarrow is provided for luggage.
How do I get firewood?
The stove is laid ready for your arrival. Extra logs are in the wood shed at £5 per 10 logs; just leave the money in the hut when you go. There's a knack to lighting it that you'll pick up in no time, and the in-hut Guest Information walks you through it if you're new to wood stoves.
Is there electricity or running water in the hut?
No. Kittiwake has no mains electricity, no plug sockets, and no running water in the hut. There are solar lights, candles, gas and a camping stove. 25 litres of drinking water are left for each changeover; you refill at the car park basin and carry water in, using the wheelbarrow when useful.
What should I bring?
Linen and towels are provided. You will need to bring all food, drink, and supplies. See the checklist above for the full list.
